Galata Tower History
Galata Tower is one of the oldest towers in the world. It is a distinctive tourist attraction. The famous historical tower is located in the Taksim district on the European side of Istanbul in the most prestigious place in the Bosphorus Strait
It was built in 507 AD and restored during the time of the Ottoman Empire in 1509 by the Ottoman architect Khair al-Din, one of the students of the famous architecture Sinan.
Its height is about 66.90 meters, its outer diameter is about 16.45 meters, its internal diameter is about 8.95 meters, and the thickness of its walls is estimated at 3.75 meters.
Tower uses
Galata Tower is one of the most prominent landmarks of Istanbul, where it was used for long periods as a tower to monitor fires, and it was used during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent as a private prison. In the sixteenth century an astrology observatory was built by the scientist Taqi al-Din Effendi.
The tower consists of 9 floors, so that the first seven floors are climbed through the electric elevator, and the rest of the floors are on foot.
